What is C2PA?

Every piece of content has an origin. C2PA is the open technical standard that tells that story through verifiable information about provenance, edits and the published version.

  • What it is

    An open standard for attaching signed information about origin and edits to images, video, audio and digital documents.

  • Who created it

    The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, bringing together the work of the Content Authenticity Initiative and Project Origin. Founding members include Adobe, Arm, BBC, Intel, Microsoft and Truepic.

  • Who is involved

    Technology companies, publishers, media organizations and hardware manufacturers: an ecosystem working together to make content provenance readable across different tools and platforms.

  • The problem it addresses

    It helps people assess content by making the declared source and edits verifiable. It provides context to help address misinformation and manipulation, without certifying the truth of what is depicted.

After publication

Has the file changed?
Check its credentials.

A copy you received, an edited image, a re-exported file: SCE’s C2PA verifier reads available credentials and checks the signature and integrity against the signed version.

Select a supported file to view the result, declared provenance data and detailed checks. The file is processed in your browser without being uploaded to our servers.

Verification does not modify the original file.

  • The data matches the signature

    The integrity check confirms that the protected data matches the signed version. Recognition of the signer is checked separately.

  • The file has been modified

    If an edit affects the protected data and the credentials are not updated, the integrity check detects a mismatch. The details help explain which checks failed.

  • No credentials were found

    The file may never have been signed, or its credentials may have been lost during export or sharing. The absence of readable credentials does not prove that content is false.

A legitimate edit can be accompanied by new, valid credentials. Verification concerns the signature and integrity: it does not certify the truth of what the content describes or depicts.
